Motivational and Self Help Books...

Today we're going to discuss Motivational and Self Help books, and what is in 90% of them.

Now, I feel that I can safely comment on this as I am 98% finished writing a self-help book for small business owners, and as can be seen by the photo, I have quite a few at my disposal to look through and I have noticed some similarities.

The following tips are what appears to be around 90% of their content, they all seem to repeat the same advice over and over again.

Don’t believe me?

Look at the Table of Contents pages of a dozen or so of them, they all seem to fall under the same categories, they may also be worded differently or geared toward a specific target audience, but the underlying message is always the same.

So, let me save you some money, and give to you free a list of that advice, broken down to their simple core messages:
1. You Create Your Own Life, So: Make It A Good One!You are not a victim. You are 100% responsible for the life you have and live right now. If you are unhappy, change it. You have the power to change your attitude and actions, even your lifestyle, so start making your life better right now. Remember: If you think life sucks or you think life is great, you’re right, either way.

2. Make Yourself Feel The Way You Want To Feel
Have you ever noticed how some people brush off insults, or problems? While others take them to heart and get furious? Realize that nobody can “make” you feel anything or anyway. You are the one that “chooses” to feel good or bad about a particular event or action that occurs, so choose to make the right decision.

3. Fake It And Then You'll Make It
It sounds trite, but if you want to be more confident, happy, or positive, then “pretend” that you already are this way. Eventually, after enough time has passed with you acting in this way, you will realize that you’re no longer “pretending”, and that you are "making it".

4. Follow Your Own Purpose
First of all you need to find or discover your purpose. "Look behind the couch" is not an answer here, nor is have someone find it for you or tell you what it is. Your purpose is what you enjoy doing every single day, that you never get tired of and you will do for every day of the rest of your life. Create a list of purposes and choose the one that speaks to you the most. You need to discover this purpose for yourself.

5. Set Achievable Goals And Schedule Your Day to Achieve ThemAlmost every book says this (even the 10% not covered by this list). Simply create a list out 5 to 10 goals that you want for your life. From family, business success, personal relationships and health, and then break each goal up into smaller sub-goals and then break those sub-goals into individual tasks and action steps. It does take time to do this, and this in itself is quite often the reason why people stumble at this point. So: Every night, plan the next day in advance. Create a daily “to-do list” with those tasks that you need to do to accomplish your goals, everything you do must work towards those goals.

6. Live In The Present, The Here, The Now, & The MomentDon't dwell on regret and shame come from your past. And while worrying and anxiety come from living in the future. True peace of mind comes from living in the present, the here, and the now. The more you become aware of being in the present, the more it becomes a part of your daily life.

7. The Power Of Attraction
It's no 'Secret'; The power of attraction is a very powerful mental tool. The process itself works by focusing on something that you want (remember, your goals) while visualizing that you already have it, so while closely related to advice 3, this is more specific in that: You will then have a heightened level of awareness for recognizing opportunities that occur around you. From serendipitous moments to opportunities that bring what you want into your physical reality to act upon.

8. Expand, Strengthen and Set Up Your Comfort Zones
Whatever your comfort zone is, (what you feel comfortable doing), will always be in a state of expansion or contraction. The more you explore and get out into the world and do what you feel uncomfortable doing, the less inhibited you become, thereby allowing you to live a richer and fuller life, and encounter experiences that will help to define you and help in attracting the people and things you need in your life.

9. Asking, The Power of QuestionsIt's easy; Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. It’s the reason why your children ask you over, and over, and over, and over again for the same things, because they know that eventually, mum and dad will cave in. It really is the case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease. The same concept works in the real world. If there is something in the world you want, ask for it…or at least ask how to get it. But, and this is a big BUT... ask the right people for help...

10. Learn How To Copy From The Professionals
Advice number 9 and 10 are closely linked. You have to then find the successful people in your field and ask them for advice or help. Ask them what they did to be successful, and then copy them. Most successful people in any field will be more than willing to share their knowledge, if only someone like you will ask them.

11. Ignore The Naysayers
Naysayers or Trolls are people that will try to discourage you from your accomplishing your dreams. Quite simply, don’t listen to them. Realize that the only reason they are being so negative is because, by seeing you chase after your dreams and succeeding, it is reminding them that they aren’t.

So there you go, I hope that I have saved you a bit of money here with this list.
Until next time... Keep on Selling!  Earl P.
